Ten Beautiful Friendship Quotes

I expected writing a “quotes” post to be fairly easy, but as it turns out, when it comes to friendship, there are so many beautiful quotes out there, that picking the best ones is tough.

Friendship is defined as co-operative and supportive behavior between two or more people. Friends respect each other, enjoy each other’s company, and help each other out in times of need. Friendship is considered one of the central human experiences, and has been sanctified by all major religions.

The following are ten of my favorite friendship quotes.

1. “It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson. I love this quote because it is so true. Think about it: how many people in your life will forgive you if you act stupid, or if you’re not at your best? Most of them won’t forgive you. Your true friends will.

2. “It is not so much our friends’ help that helps us as the confident knowledge that they will help us.” – Epicurus.

3. “One loyal friend is worth ten thousand relatives.” – Euripides. There are many other quotes that point out that friendship is a true choice, and thus is more valuable, in a way, than family ties.

4. “Anybody can sympathize with the sufferings of a friend, but it requires a very fine nature to sympathize with a friend’s success.” – Oscar Wilde. Hard to admit, but so true.

5. “Misfortune shows those who are not really friends.” – Aristotle.

6. “Grief can take care of itself, but to get the full value of joy you must have somebody to divide it with.” – Mark Twain.

7. “Do not save your loving speeches
For your friends till they are dead;
Do not write them on their tombstones,
Speak them rather now instead.” – Anna Cummins. Have you told a friend that you love them today?

8. “A friend to all is a friend to none.” – Aristotle.

10. “Friendship? Yes Please.” -Charles Dickens. I’ll have one too.

Friendships today are very different than friendships in the past. While more and more people complain that they are having a hard time keeping in touch with their real-life friends, because everyone is so busy these days, modern life is giving us tools, from e-mail to social networks, that enable us to keep in touch with people who just a decade ago would have disappeared from our lives.

And while real-life connections often end when a person moves away or changes jobs, online connections can stay active for years, unless we physically remove the person from our online network. Think about it: when was the last time you met someone new? Is that person on one of your online networks now? And how likely are you to see them again in real life?

When I ask myself these questions, the answers are clear: I am very likely to add most new contacts to one of my online networks (Facebook or Twitter). Many times, I never see that person again in real life – but I continue to see their avatar and interact with them, admittedly on a somewhat shallow level, online.

Some people argue that online networks dilute the term “friend” and bring it to absurdity – we use the term to describe relationships that are far too shallow to be considered true friendship. While this is true, I would like to argue that in many cases, online connections offer a great deal of support to people who are otherwise fairly isolated. A good example is that of a new mom who doesn’t have mom friends in her physical community, but enjoys support from an online community of mothers.

Above all, it’s important to acknowledge that never before in history has it been so easy to keep up with so many people with whom you otherwise would have lost contact. And while an online friendship may not be as deep as a real-life one, these friendships do add value to our lives and enrich them.
